Trapped in Tatura (9781539852858)

Peter R. Auer's first book, Flight from Vienna, recounts the courtship of Lili Gruen and Rudi Auer and their life in early-thirties Vienna before the rise of anti-Semitism and the rise of Hitlerism drives them from their beloved homeland.

Its sequel, Exiled in Palestine, finds Rudi and Lili married and attempting to build a life in Palestine, where they are exiled under British Mandate. War soon spills over-the pair is interned, and Lili gives birth to their first child while in the camp. With the closing of the mandate, the young family is sent to a distant land.

Trapped in Tatura picks up the tale-based on the true story-of the Auer family as they find themselves interned once more-in Tatura, in faraway Victoria, Australia. The anti-Semitism so prominent in Europe has spread even to these far reaches, and Rudi, Lili, and their young son, Peter, face mistreatment and prejudice wherever they turn. A daughter, Liselotte, is added to the family during internment in Tatura.

Life is difficult for the mixed company of internees, but together they cope with the challenges of camp living, offering hope that once the war is over, Rudi and his family may find their freedom.

But can they return to a home that drove them away due to anti-Semitism in the first place?

Socrates : Ironist and Moral Philosopher (9780521314503)

This long-awaited study of the most enigmatic figure of Greek philosophy reclaims Socrates' ground-breaking originality. Written by a leading historian of Greek thought, it argues for a Socrates who, though long overshadowed by his successors Plato and Aristotle, marked the true turning point in Greek philosophy, religion and ethics. The quest for the historical figure focuses on the Socrates of Plato's earlier dialogues, setting him in sharp contrast to that other Socrates of later dialogues, where he is used as a mouthpiece for Plato's often anti-Socratic doctrine. At the heart of the book is the paradoxical nature of Socratic thought. But the paradoxes are explained, not explained away. The book highlights the tensions in the Socratic search for the answer to the question 'How should we live?' Conceived as a divine mandate, the search is carried out through elenctic argument, and dominated by an uncompromising rationalism. The magnetic quality of Socrates...

Benjamin Disraeli : The Novel as Political Discourse (9781903900307)

December 2004 marked the bicentenary of Benjamin Disraeli's birth. The Novel as Political Discourse examines Disraeli's novels in order to construct a portrait of the man, his context and enduring reputation. Disraeli's literary career ran from 1826 to 1880. Within this time he became an M.P., Leader of the Opposition, Chancellor and Prime Minister. His novels can be read as the breeding ground for his ideas, gestated away from the pressure cooker of Parliament. From his first novel, Vivian Grey, about the formation of a new political party, through to the overtly political Young England' trilogy (named after a faction of the Conservative Party with which Disraeli was aligned) and beyond, Disraeli's novels expose the development of his thinking while also reflecting the anxieties of his age. This book will appeal to those fascinated by Disraeli and Conservatism and anyone interested in the development of Britain in the Victorian era. The book enhances our unders...

Presence : Human Purpose and the Field of the Future (9780385516303)

Presence is an intimate look at the development of a new theory about change and learning. In wide-ranging conversations held over a year and a half, organizational learning pioneers Peter Senge, C. Otto Scharmer, Joseph Jaworski, and Betty Sue Flowers explored the nature of transformational change--how it arises, and the fresh possibilities it offers a world dangerously out of balance. The book introduces the idea of "presence"--a concept borrowed from the natural world that the whole is entirely present in any of its parts--to the worlds of business, education, government, and leadership. Too often, the authors found, we remain stuck in old patterns of seeing and acting. By encouraging deeper levels of learning, we create an awareness of the larger whole, leading to actions that can help to shape its evolution and our future. Drawing on the wisdom and experience of 150 scientists, social leaders, and entrepreneurs, including Brian Arthur, Rupert Sheldrake, Buckminster Fulle...
